Bullion is the pure form of a precious metal such as gold, silver, platinum or palladium, from which bullion coin are made. Usually these coins bought and kept as a store of value or an investment.
Bullion coins are usually available in gold and silver. South African Krugerrand and the Swiss Vreneli are only made from gold bullion. The American Eagles are available in silver, gold and platinum. Canadian Maple Leaf coins are available in silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Mexican Libertad coins are available in gold and silver.
Bullion coins sell with a premium over the spot price of the precious metal due to the costs associated with manufacture, storage and distribution of the coins. This premium depends on type of coin, the coin weight, and the precious metal. Premium for the smaller coins (1/20 oz, 1/10-oz, 1/4 oz or 1/2 oz) is always higher than the premium for 1-oz coins.
